EV Charging & Driveways: What Essex Homeowners Need to Know
Installing an EV charger on your driveway? Here's how it affects your driveway design, dropped kerb needs, and whether you need a cable channel.
EV chargers and driveway design
Electric vehicle ownership in Essex has tripled since 2021. If you're installing a new driveway, planning for an EV charger from the start saves money and disruption later.
Key considerations:
- Charger location. Mount on the front wall of the house, a garage wall, or a freestanding post. The cable reach (typically 5–7 metres) determines where on the driveway you can charge.
- Cable management. If the charger is far from the consumer unit, you may need a cable channel under the driveway. Install this during construction — digging up a finished driveway costs 5–10x more.
- Surface choice. All standard driveway surfaces work with EV charging. Just avoid parking a heavy vehicle (2+ tonnes) repeatedly on the same resin bound spot in extreme heat.
On-street parking and cable channels
No off-street parking? You can run a cable across the pavement to charge on-street, but you must use an approved cable channel or gully cover to prevent a trip hazard. Essex County Council allows this under the Highways Act provided the cable is protected.

Costs
- Home EV charger (7kW): £800–£1,200 installed
- Cable channel under driveway: £200–£400 (during construction) or £800–£1,500 (retrofitted)
- Electrical upgrade (if needed): £300–£600 for a consumer unit upgrade
The government's EV chargepoint grant (now the OZEV scheme) no longer covers single-unit homes, but landlords and tenants in rental properties can still claim up to £350 per socket.
Planning ahead
Even if you don't have an EV yet, future-proof your new driveway:
- Run a ducting pipe under the driveway from the house to the charger location. Cost: £50–£100 during construction.
- Ask your electrician to check whether your consumer unit can handle a 7kW charger (32A dedicated circuit).
- Position any drainage channels so they don't interfere with where you'll park and charge.
A driveway that's EV-ready adds value and avoids expensive retrofitting. Get quotes from contractors who plan for EV charging.
