Why Indian sandstone dominates the patio market
Indian sandstone is the UK's most popular natural stone for patios. It's cheaper than York stone, more characterful than concrete slabs, and available in a wide range of warm natural tones. In Brentwood and Essex, it accounts for around 50% of new patio installations.
Installed cost: £50–£100 per m². A typical 30m² rear patio runs £1,500–£3,000 including groundwork, materials and pointing.
Popular colours for Essex homes
The five standard colours you'll see across Brentwood:

Colour variation is natural and expected — that's the charm. Every slab is different. If you want uniformity, porcelain is a better choice.
Installation on Essex clay
The standard method on clay soil: excavate 200–250mm, lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base (150mm minimum), then bed each slab on a full mortar bed (not five-spot — that method fails on clay). Point with a flexible jointing compound or a 4:1 sand-cement mix.
Essex clay moves. A full mortar bed spreads the load and prevents individual slabs rocking or sinking. The extra cost (£5–£10/m²) versus five-spot bedding is worth it for a patio that stays flat for 20+ years.
Sealing: yes or no?
Opinions vary. Sealing protects against staining (red wine, BBQ grease, leaf tannins) and makes cleaning easier. But it changes the natural appearance — sealed sandstone looks permanently wet and darker.
Our take: seal high-use areas near a BBQ or dining table. Leave the rest natural. Use a breathable, matt-finish sealer — never a gloss coating, which traps moisture and causes the stone to spall in frost. Reapply every 3–5 years. Cost: £5–£8/m².
