Block Paving vs Resin Bound: Which Is Best for Essex Clay?

A head-to-head comparison of the two most popular driveway surfaces in Essex — cost, durability, maintenance and suitability for clay soil.

The two most popular choices in Essex

Block paving and resin bound account for around 80% of new driveways installed in Brentwood and the surrounding Essex area. Both are attractive, durable and available in permeable versions — but they suit different properties, budgets and priorities.

This guide compares them across every factor that matters when choosing a driveway on Essex clay soil.

Cost comparison

Block paving costs £60–£120 per m², while resin bound costs £50–£100 per m². However, resin bound requires a solid base (asphalt or concrete) which adds £20–£40 per m² on clay soil where no existing base exists. On a like-for-like basis, total installed costs are often similar.

For a typical 50m² driveway in Brentwood, expect to pay £3,000–£6,000 for block paving and £3,500–£7,000 for resin bound (including base preparation on clay).

Performance on Essex clay soil

Block paving wins on clay. Individual blocks flex independently with ground movement — if the clay swells or shrinks, the blocks shift slightly without cracking. A damaged block can be lifted and replaced in minutes.

Resin bound is a continuous surface, so any sub-base movement can cause cracks. On Essex clay, this means you need a deeper, more expensive sub-base (minimum 200mm MOT Type 1 plus asphalt) to create a stable platform. Skipping this step is the most common cause of resin driveway failure in the area.

Maintenance

Resin bound wins on maintenance. The smooth, sealed surface resists weeds, moss and staining. An occasional pressure wash is all it needs.

Block paving requires more upkeep — weeds grow in the joints (kiln-dried sand or polymeric sand helps), moss can develop in shaded areas, and the surface needs re-sanding every few years. However, individual repairs are far easier and cheaper than fixing resin.

Appearance and design options

Block paving offers hundreds of shapes, colours and laying patterns — from traditional herringbone to contemporary linear designs. It suits period properties and modern homes alike.

Resin bound gives a sleek, seamless finish with a wide range of natural aggregate colours. It's particularly popular on contemporary properties and for homeowners who want a clean, modern look. However, design options are limited to colour choice — there are no patterns or borders.

Planning permission

Both surfaces are available in permeable versions that avoid the need for planning permission. Permeable block paving uses wider joints with angular gravel. Resin bound is naturally permeable when laid on a porous base. Standard (non-permeable) block paving and tarmac bases for resin may require planning permission if the driveway exceeds 5m².

Our verdict

Choose block paving if: you're on a budget, your soil is heavy clay, you want design flexibility, or you want easy individual repairs.

Choose resin bound if: you want a modern seamless look, you have an existing concrete or asphalt base in good condition, or you want minimal ongoing maintenance.

Both are excellent choices when installed correctly. The key on Essex clay is always the groundwork — regardless of surface, invest in a proper sub-base.
