Resin Bound Driveways: The Complete Essex Guide
Resin bound costs £50–£100/m². Smooth, permeable, low-maintenance — but it needs a solid base, especially on Essex clay. Full guide.
What is resin bound?
Resin bound is a surface made by mixing natural aggregate (small stones) with a clear UV-stable resin, then trowelling the mixture onto a solid base. The result is a smooth, seamless, permeable surface that looks clean and contemporary.
It's different from resin bonded, where loose aggregate is scattered onto a resin-coated surface — resin bonded is rougher, less permeable, and sheds stones over time. Always specify resin bound.
Costs in Brentwood and Essex
Resin bound surface: £50–£100 per m². But that's just the top layer. On Essex clay, you need a solid base underneath:
- New base (no existing surface): Excavation + 200mm sub-base + 40mm asphalt base course = add £30–£50/m²
- Existing concrete or tarmac in good condition: Overlay directly = no extra base cost
- Existing surface in poor condition: Repair or replace = add £15–£30/m²
Total installed cost for a 50m² driveway on clay with no existing base: £4,000–£7,500. With an existing base: £2,500–£5,000. See our full cost guide for comparisons.

The clay soil warning
Resin bound on Essex clay fails when the base moves. Unlike block paving (which flexes at each joint), resin is a continuous surface — any sub-base movement causes cracks.
The fix: a proper base. Minimum 200mm compacted MOT Type 1 plus 40mm asphalt binder course. Some contractors skimp on this to win on price. The result: cracks within 2–3 years and a warranty claim that goes nowhere because the base wasn't specified.
Ask your contractor to specify the base build-up in writing. If they won't, find someone who will. Compare quotes from verified Essex contractors.
